Cycling to rebuild a nation...
Not everyone can draft an architectural plan or put up a structure from the ground up but any person can do the best with whatever talent he has to contribute to a great cause. One group of friends could not build homes physically but learned they could raise them up by pedaling their bikes.
Robby and Benjo Villanueva, Sonny Gaite, Gerry Tolentino, Manolet Rodriguez, Noli Calingo, Red Sioson, Frank Lesaca and Rey Diamse, among many Filipinos abroad, have the desire to give back to the land of their birth. It happened because of one common interest: riding bikes. They were cycling buddies since July 2004 when the group invited Sioson to join them on their regular rides along Long Beach, California.
They started to ride for fun, three-times a week while taking long rides on weekends. After several months, more members from the Couples for Christ community they belonged to joined in and the group of cycling hobbyists was formed. They called themselves Lucky Chan, a Filipino pun to mean “big stomachs.”
Sikad Ng Bayan Team has grown exponentially since then. Two bike rides have branched out of Sikad: Santa Clarita Grand Pondo (October) and Las Vegas Sikad (October/November).
